The artwork is adapted from Arabesques; applications de découpures en papier (fin du XVIIIe siècle) by Émile Prisse d'Avennes (French, 1807–1879), a celebrated artist, engineer, and archaeologist renowned for his extensive documentation of Islamic art and architecture. This color lithograph presents intricate arabesques—geometric and floral motifs originally cut from paper—reflecting aesthetic traditions found across the Islamic world. Prisse d'Avennes devoted much of his career to preserving and illustrating these visual languages, producing landmark works that remain fundamental to the study of Islamic ornament.
