Blue Butterflies and Pomegranate is one of the most celebrated works of pioneering naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717). The illustration depicts a flowering pomegranate branch alongside two vivid Morpho menelaus butterflies, a species native to South America. Merian was among the first artists to use microscopes to study insects and plants, capturing their forms with extraordinary precision and reshaping the scientific study of metamorphosis and natural history through art.
