The mid-19th century series of carpet designs, created between circa 1854 and circa 1864, showcases the intricate work of an anonymous designer for Deventer Tapijtfabriek and Firma Smaale. These detailed drawings on paper, using gouache and brush techniques, were made for warehouse representatives to present to customers. Each drawing typically depicts a quarter of the design, including the border, middle section (ground or fond), and central medallion, with the warehouse using mirrors to visualize the complete carpet. The series exemplifies the ornate and methodical approach to carpet design and marketing in this period, reflecting the rich tradition of the Deventer carpet industry.
