The artwork is based on Plate II of Chinois et Japonais by Albert-Charles-Auguste Racinet (1825–1893), an accomplished French illustrator and historian of ornament. Best known for his landmark works Le Costume Historique and L'Ornement Polychrome, Racinet documented global design traditions with extraordinary detail and respect. Published between 1869 and 1873, his first edition of L'Ornement Polychrome presented 100 plates recording the decorative arts from antiquity through the eighteenth century. This plate reflects his fascination with East Asian motifs, celebrating the harmony, rhythm, and symbolism of Chinese and Japanese ornament while bringing its legacy into modern design.
