The plate features a central panel of quatrefoil motifs arranged in a geometric pattern, surrounded by a border of stylized floral and geometric designs. The colors are bright and vibrant, and the overall effect is one of richness and complexity. The designs on Plate 12 are taken from a variety of Chinese objects, including ceramics, textiles, and furniture. Jones was particularly interested in the use of color and pattern in Chinese art, and he sought to capture the beauty and complexity of these designs in his chromolithographs. Plate 12 is one of a series of 100 chromolithographs published by Jones in 1867. The series was titled Examples of Chinese Ornament selected from objects in the South Kensington Museum and other collections, and it was intended to provide a comprehensive overview of Chinese decorative art.
