Artwork designed and digitally remastered by Sarasvati Designs. Utagawa Kuniyoshi's “Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre Conjured Up by Princess Takiyasha” is an iconic Japanese woodblock print from the Edo period. It depicts a scene from a popular Japanese folktale, in which the warrior Mitsukuni is confronted by a giant skeleton conjured up by the evil Princess Takiyasha. The print is a triptych, meaning that it consists of three separate panels that are meant to be displayed together. The left panel shows Princess Takiyasha reading from a scroll of spells, while the right panel shows Mitsukuni standing defiantly before the skeleton. The central panel is dominated by the skeleton itself, which is shown pulling back tattered reed blinds to reveal its hideous form. “Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre” is a masterpiece of Japanese woodblock printing.
