Artwork designed and digitally remastered by Sarasvati Designs. “Modern Gallants with Morning Glories” (1860) is one panel from a triptych woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892). The full triptych depicts three young kabuki actors—Ichikawa Ichizō III, Kawarazaki Gonjūrō I, and Nakamura Shikan IV—dressed in the height of mid-19th-century fashion. This particular panel features Nakamura Shikan IV posed before a backdrop of blooming morning glories. Yoshitoshi’s masterful use of vibrant color, refined linework, and layered printing techniques brings depth, movement, and elegance to the scene. The artwork provides a vivid glimpse into late Edo-period kabuki culture, celebrated for its dramatic performances and exquisite sartorial style.
