The artwork is inspired by Ornamental Tiles (Pl. 10) collected by the Afghan Boundary Commission, a joint Anglo-Russian effort established in 1884 to define the border between Afghanistan and the Russian Empire. During four years of surveying, the commission gathered over 2,000 glazed ceramic tiles—many adorned with intricate geometric and floral motifs—originally used to embellish mosques, madrasas, and other public buildings. These tiles stand as remarkable examples of Afghan Islamic art, offering valuable insight into the region’s architectural aesthetics, cultural identity, and enduring artistic traditions.
