This design draws from Ornamental Tiles (Pl. 10), part of a larger group of glazed ceramic tiles documented by the Anglo-Russian Afghan Boundary Commission (est. 1884) during its survey of the frontier. The commission gathered thousands of examples featuring geometric and floral patterns originally used on mosques, madrasas, and public buildings.
