The featured design is inspired by Ornamental Tiles (Pl. 4), part of a collection gathered by the Afghan Boundary Commission, a joint Anglo-Russian expedition established in 1884 to define the border between Afghanistan and the Russian Empire. Over four years of surveying, the commission collected more than 2,000 glazed ceramic tiles adorned with refined geometric and floral motifs. Originally used to embellish mosques, madrasas, and other public buildings, these tiles represent some of the finest examples of Afghan Islamic decorative arts, offering invaluable insight into the region’s cultural traditions, architectural aesthetics, and artistic heritage.
