Artwork designed and digitally remastered by Sarasvati Designs. The Afghan Boundary Commission was a joint Anglo-Russian commission that was established in 1884 to delimit the border between Afghanistan and the Russian Empire. The commission spent four years surveying the border, and it also collected a large number of artifacts, including these ornamental tiles. The18 tiles are part of a larger collection of over 2,000 tiles that were collected by the commission. The tiles are made of glazed ceramic and are decorated with a variety of geometric and floral patterns. They were originally used to decorate mosques, madrasas, and other public buildings in Afghanistan. They are a fine example of Afghan Islamic art, and they provide valuable insights into the culture and history of Afghanistan.
