Rita Rides on the Dolphin is a 1911 illustration by Warwick Goble for the fairy tale “The Three Enchanted Princes” from the Pentamerone, a collection of Italian fairy tales by Giambattista Basile. The artwork depicts Rita, a young woman with long flowing hair and a graceful gown, riding across a turquoise sea on the back of a dolphin. The underlying tale tells the story of three princes cursed by an evil witch to live as animals—a falcon, a stag, and a dolphin—until they can find someone who will love them beyond their forms. Three sisters eventually encounter the enchanted princes, learn their true identities, and agree to marry them. The curse is broken, the princes return to human form, and the couples live happily ever after. This timeless illustration captures the magic, wonder, and romance of classic fairy-tale storytelling.
