The Artwork
The Lady Of The Extraordinary Masquerade features an elegantly composed woman dressed for a masquerade that appears to have absolutely no interest in restraint. Her spectacular gown combines brilliant scarlet, coral, blue, pink, and gold in a profusion of embroidered flowers, curling vines, ornamental details, and cascading fabric.
Above it rises an extraordinary coiffure and headdress of towering white curls, coral and orange feathers, flowers, jewels, pearls, ribbons, and dangling ornaments. The elaborate creation becomes almost architectural in scale, transforming her silhouette into a wonderfully theatrical centerpiece.
She holds a tiny black masquerade mask delicately beside her face, as though deciding whether concealment is really necessary when one has already arrived wearing the most spectacular ensemble in the garden.
Two wonderfully dressed monkeys complete the scene. One perches beside her in a vivid orange costume and turban while holding a small object; the other stands in a magnificent red-and-gold patterned robe beneath an elaborate golden headdress.
