Artwork designed and digitally remastered by Sarasvati Designs. Created in 1915 as part of "The Swan" series, Hilma af Klint’s Group IX/SUW, The Swan, No. 1 delves into themes of duality and transformation through abstract forms and symbolic imagery. Af Klint began creating radically abstract works in 1906, predating the non-representational art of Kandinsky, Malevich, and Mondrian. Her bold, colorful canvases, often unseen until 1986, explore the union of opposites—light and dark, male and female—using black-and-white swans that meet at the center, symbolizing alchemical transformations. The horizon line, a recurring element, divides and unifies the composition, reflecting af Klint’s spiritual and theoretical explorations. Despite their groundbreaking nature, af Klint believed her works were ahead of their time and instructed that they not be shown until decades after her death, which contributed to her delayed recognition.
